Contact firstname.lastname@example.org or call 773-769-0282 for more information on any of these opportunities.
All programs take place at All Saints' Episcopal Church, 4550 N Hermitage Ave, unless otherwise noted.
Each Tuesday we have a Food Pantry & Community Meal Program from 5:00-7:30. Volunteers set out dry goods, bag vegetables, and distribute groceries in the pantry; and cook, set tables, serve dinner, clean the dining room, and wash dishes for the community meal. 30-60 volunteers distribute groceries and serve dinner to 250-350 neighbors.
On the first and third Thursdays of each month RCS receives food deliveries from the Greater Chicago Food Depository. Volunteers are needed for about an hour in the morning to help unload the truck.
On the second Saturday of each month we host an outdoor, market-style pantry at nearby Ravenswood Elementary School at 4332 N Paulina St. The volunteer time is from 8:30-11:00am, and in that time volunteers unload a truck of groceries from the Greater Chicago Food Depository, set up the pantry, and distribute groceries to more than 200 neighbors.
Twice a year RCS hosts the All Saints' Café, a restaurant-style meal for our neighbors, complete with tablecloths, servers, menus, and live music. There are many different volunteer jobs: food prep, washing dishes, serving and bussing tables, being a runner between the dining room and kitchen, putting plates together on the food line, and more. The volunteer time is 4-8pm. For safety all volunteers must be eight or older.
Each April, RCS hosts the Ravenswood Run in partnership with All Saints' Episcopal Church and Fleet Feet Sports. This neighborhood 5k attracts 4,000 runners and there are opportunities for volunteers both in the weeks leading up to the run and on race day. Volunteers post signs, visit businesses along the route, hand out water, help with parking, serve snacks, and much more.
Also in April, RCS volunteers put on the annual Reality Fair at Ravenswood Elementary School. This life-sized version of The Game of Life® is a fun financial literacy program for the seventh and eighth-graders at Ravenswood School.
In June, the Greater Chicago Food Depository hosts the Hunger Walk at Soldier Field. This is a 5k walk to raise awareness of hunger issues in the Chicago area and raise money for pantries, including RCS. We earn food credit with GCFD for each person who registers to walk with us, so bring your friends and join us for a walk along the lakefront.
Volunteering with a group:
All of the opportunities listed above are great for volunteer groups. If your school club, office, youth group, etc. would like to volunteer, please contact us to schedule a date.
Volunteers occasionally help with cleaning projects, basic office tasks, and other special projects. If you need service hours or have a volunteer group that is not available during our usual program time, contact us to see if there are projects available.
Greater Chicago Food Depository:
Groups and individuals may also volunteer at the Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD is a major food bank which supplies local food pantries like RCS) on behalf of Ravenswood Community Services. Volunteer time at GCFD turns into food credit for our account – you must designate "Ravenswood Community Services A00462″ for the credit to apply. We pay just pennies per pound for food from GCFD, so any volunteer labor credit helps us in a big way! For more info, visit their website.
